Excerpt — Chapter 5: In the Red, the 1930s
  • If an era can be said to have ended in an afternoon, the Jazz Age played its last with the clanging of the closing bell of the stock market on October 29, 1929. The implosion of the capital markets that had fueled the go-go-go ethos of the 1920s meant that America was now depressed—both financially and in spirit.

  • Tough times would prove a boon for cosmetics, in part because the industry had spent the years between the suffragists and the flappers making their products an indispensable, inevitable part of the female experience—not wearing lipstick was now the statement (and not one a respectable woman wanted to make) plus now was no time for going au naturel, when a woman’s own personal boom or bust could depend on a well-painted face. Less than two decades into its acceptance as an everyday essential like toothpaste or electricity, lipstick was already assuming the weight of obligation and expectation of products specifically marketed to women. Lipstick’s advent came with the now constant mass media chatter that promised both to emancipate one’s true power as a woman and to make her acceptable to the patriarchy. So which was it? Like most changes that redefined the contours of what it meant to be female in the world, it was a little bit of both. For a new generation of women, lipstick now represented some very modern aspirations: economic independence, self-expression, and a knowing sex appeal. On the other hand, it also meant a nonstop mission to fit a very narrow definition of beauty that was marked by worship of an ideal that was white, effortlessly flawless, upwardly mobile, young, and straight. Either model of womanhood was a hard target to hit, but as in the movies of the era, women were taught in ways great and small to paint on a smile, keep their chin up, and keep on trying—and maybe tap dance.
